Servite Appreciates Rueff’s Ef fort

Senior John Rueff celebrated Senior Appreciation Day by scoring the first two touchdowns of his career to help Servite defeat Ocean View, 36-0, in Golden West play Friday night at Cal State Fullerton.

With the victory, Servite (5-5, 4-1 in league) heads into the Southern Section playoffs as the second-place league representative.

Servite scored on its first drive, highlighted by George Sanchez’s 36-yard run. Mark Bedard scored from the four to cap the 68-yard drive.

Ocean View (1-9, 1-4) halted the next Friar drive with a fumble recovery by Matt Trice on the Sea Hawk three. Pinned near its goal line, Ocean View gave up a safety when Ali Zandi tackled Scott McMahon in the end zone.

Tyrone Gribbon scored two second-quarter touchdowns to give Servite a 24-0 lead at halftime. He was on the receiving end of a nine-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Garko and scored on a two-yard run. He also had a two-point conversion.

Rueff scored on runs of five and three yards, both in the second half, for Servite.

Jeremiah Armendariz accounted for 97 yards rushing for Ocean View, including an 18-yard run off a fake punt on a fourth-and-15 situation deep in Sea Hawk territory, the top offensive play for Ocean View.

Steve Ayers and Daren DeSylvia helped preserve the shutout for Servite with fourth-quarter interceptions.

Garko completed nine of 16 passes for 137 yards and freshman Adam Ernst hit three of four for 31 yards.

Gribbon lead Servite’s balanced running attack with 77 yards. Sanchez accounted for 58 yards.

All three McMahon pass completions were to Trice for 26 yards for Ocean View.
