Sunny Hills running backs Adam Rodriguez and Kevin Haiola combined for 30 carries and carried the Lancers to the Freeway League championship with a 34-7 victory over Fullerton Friday night at Fullerton High.

Rodriguez had 17 rushes for 205 yards and scored the Lancers’ first two touchdowns. Haiola had 83 yards and one touchdown in 13 carries, reaching the 1,000-yard rushing mark for the season.

“Our players did a very good job tonight,” Sunny Hills Coach Tim Devaney said. “We wanted to win this game so that we wouldn’t fall into third place. After seeing the likes of Rancho Alamitos, Covina, and La Mirada in our division, I wasn’t looking forward to playing any of those teams in the first round of the playoffs.”

Rodriguez scored his first touchdown on a three-yard run with 1 minute 11 seconds remaining in the first quarter, capping an 80-yard, nine-play drive. The Indians tied the score early in the second quarter when quarterback Justin Bruce, on a fourth-and-24 situation, completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Cody.

Rodriguez gave the Lancers the lead for good, bolting 75 yards with 3:47 remaining in the first half. Lancer quarterback Jared Bruce completed a 14-yard scoring pass to David Goodloe with 41 seconds left before halftime to give Sunny Hills a 20-7 lead.

After a scoreless third quarter, the Lancers added to their lead with a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown by Guy Porter and a two-yard scoring run by Haiola.
