Weir Points Way to Tournament Title for Saddleback

Marshall Freeman and Kenzie Weir each made one free throw in the final 25 seconds to lift Saddleback to a 77-75 victory over Southwestern Sunday in the title game of the Saddleback men’s basketball tournament.

Freeman, a center, was fouled getting a rebound, and made one of two free throws with 25 seconds left to give Saddleback (3-0) a 76-75 lead. Freeman finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds and made the all-tournament team.

Weir, the point guard, had 18 points, including making a free throw with about 10 seconds left. He also had five assists and was selected the tournament’s most valuable player.

Sherman Frazier added 10 points and seven rebounds for Saddleback.

In the Victor Valley tournament:

Riverside 87, Cypress 72--A.D. Lamoureux, a sophomore forward, scored 25 points and had 11 rebounds, but Cypress (2-1) lost in the championship game to Orange Empire Conference rival Riverside (3-0).

The game capped a big tournament for Lamoureux, who attended Los Alamitos High. He had 25 points and 15 rebounds in a 79-60 victory over Glendale in the semifinal round. He started the season by scoring 22 points as Cypress beat Grossmont, 83-64, Friday.

Brian Hooks made 14 of 22 shots from the field, including five of 10 three-pointers and finished with 35 points for Riverside. Danny Sampson added 23 for the Tigers.

In the Chaffey women’s tournament:

Ventura 70, Orange Coast 45--Jennifer Ludwicki, a transfer from Washington State, scored 14 points and Natalie Weeks, a transfer from Idaho, added 12 for Orange Coast (1-2) in the third-place game.
