Orange Lutheran Capitalizes on Interceptions

Orange Lutheran capitalized on three of its four interceptions en route to a 35-7 victory over Los Angeles Verbum Dei in a Southern Section Division X playoff game Friday at Downey Pius X High.

The Lancers (8-2-1) will face Santa Barbara Bishop Diego in a second-round game next week.

Jeff Renevier grabbed Orange Lutheran’s first interception with 1 minute 18 seconds left in the first quarter. A minute later, the Lancers capitalized as Jason Whieldon scored on a 26-yard run to put Orange Lutheran ahead, 14-0.

Renevier earlier scored on a 30-yard pass from Whieldon, who completed five of 14 for 148 yards.

Verbum Dei stopped Orange Lutheran at the one-yard line when the Lancers tried to score on a quarterback sneak. Verbum Dei took over but then gave up the ball on an interception to Renevier.

In the second quarter, Verbum Dei’s Sedric White threw a 45-yard pass to Rickey Williams. Four plays later, White scored on a two-yard run with 4:07 left.

Orange Lutheran took a 21-7 halftime lead after Renevier caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Whieldon with 48 seconds left.

Tim Fleming’s interception late in the third quarter set up Whieldon’s eight-yard scoring run.

After three picks interceptions in three quarters, White was removed and Daryl Connor took over and was greeted with an interception by Dee Meza.

Orange Lutheran once again took advantage. Whieldon, who rushed for 55 yards in 11 carries, advanced the ball on a 35-yard run that set up Eric Lerch’s four-yard touchdown run with 10:11 left in the game.
