Wildcats Dominate Playoff Opener

Eric Albrecht and Scott Lieng combined for 141 yards rushing and three touchdowns to lead Brea Olinda to a 31-11 victory over El Modena in the first round of the Southern Section Division V playoffs.

The Wildcats (10-1), Orange League champions, will face Woodbridge next Friday night in the second round. Woodbridge, which finished second in the Sea View League, beat Loara, 27-0.

Lieng rushed 12 times for 71 yards and Albrecht rushed 11 times for 70 yards for the Wildcats, who had a 28-point lead midway through the second quarter.

The Wildcat defense dominated the Vanguards (4-7), shutting down El Modena’s leading runner Charlie Williams. He was limited to 69 yards in 23 carries.

El Modena’s passing attack fared no better. Matt Garcia was sacked five times--three times by defensive back Sef Morris. Garcia completed two passes for 68 yards and two passes were intercepted.

The Wildcats took a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Albrecht took an inside handoff and went around the left side for a 23-yard score.

The Wildcats made it 14-0 with 3:09 left in the first quarter on Lieng’s seven-yard run.

Early in the second quarter, the Vanguards were forced into a third-and-14 situation, but Rasuli Webster intercepted a pass at the El Modena 12 and walked into the end zone for a 21-0 lead.

Albrecht went in from four yards out for a 28-0 lead with 5:41 left in the first half.

El Modena scored with 2:31 left in the first half on Thoby Archer’s 29-yard field goal.

El Modena’s Garcia scored on an 11-yard run early in the second half, and then made the two-point conversion on a quarterback keeper to make it 28-11. But the Wildcats’ Scott Davis kicked a 34-yard field goal minutes later to close out the scoring.
