Joy Barry of Ventura College has been named Western State Conference women’s soccer player of the year for the second consecutive season.
Barry, a graduate of Thousand Oaks High who led the Pirates in scoring, helped Ventura to the conference title and a berth in the Southern California Regional for the second consecutive year.
Steve Hoffman of Ventura was named coach of the year and Pirates Barbara Almaraz, Kirsta Janik, Fiona MacDonald, Ashley Sawyer and Melissa Thaxton were selected to the all-conference team.
Also on the team are Erin Cola and Claudia Alvarez of Glendale, and Jessica Crespo, Nikki Hagouel and Tiffany Tackett of Moorpark.
Men’s WSC honors went to Arshak Abyanli of Glendale and Hugo Alcaraz of Santa Barbara, who were selected WSC men’s co-players of the year.
Michel Abedian, Armen Babalaryan and Andres Royas of Glendale were all-conference selections. Tom Barnany and Alan Carr of Moorpark also made the team.
FOOTBALL
Conference call: UCLA kicker Chris Sailer, from Notre Dame High, and safety Shaun Williams, of Crespi, were selected to the All-Pacific 10 Conference squad.
Big signing: Capistrano Valley’s Blake Worley, considered the top offensive lineman in the state, has committed to UCLA.
All in the family: Nick Czernek’s 498 yards passing in Newbury Park’s 54-34 loss to Arroyo Grande last week broke the Ventura County record of 457 yards set last season by his brother, Chris, in a 43-40 playoff loss to Muir.
Nick Czernek’s 56 passes also set a county record and Jake Farrel’s 15 catches tied a county record.
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Making a splash: Swimmers Alexis Lyon of Hayward and Valerie Schaefer of Sacramento have signed with Cal State Northridge.
Lyon, a breaststroke specialist, attends Moreau Catholic High and is touted as “the highest-rated recruit I have ever gotten to come to Cal State Northridge,” by Matador Coach Barry Schreifels.
