Stanford Edges UCI in Water Polo

UC Irvine just missed advancing to the championship round as third-ranked Stanford edged the Anteaters, 6-5, in the first round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s water polo championship Friday at Belmont Plaza Pool.

Stanford’s Sean Joy scored the winner at 3 minutes 23 seconds in the fourth quarter. Greg Finley scored a two-point goal to lead UC Irvine. Stanford is 18-6.

UC Irvine (10-14) plays Santa Barbara in a consolation semifinal game today at 9 a.m. and Stanford (18-6) plays No. 2 California, which won, 11-7, in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Both games are at Belmont Plaza Pool.

In another first-round game:

No. 1 Pepperdine 11, Long Beach State 2--Top-seeded Pepperdine had little trouble with the 49ers as seven players scored for the Waves. Pepperdine (23-1) plays USC, which beat UCLA, 8-7, in a semifinal game at 2:30 p.m..

In the Pacific Christian men’s basketball tournament:

Judson (Ill.) 80, Concordia 72--Kalim Scott had 18 points for Concordia (3-1).

In nonconference women’s basketball:

Cal Poly Pomona 78, Concordia 62--Heather Carl scored 19 points and had 11 rebounds in Concordia’s loss to Cal Poly Pomona (3-2). Concordia is 4-1.
