Flintridge Sacred Heart Outlasts Marlborough

For the Flintridge Sacred Heart girls’ volleyball team, it was just another marathon with Marlborough.

Outside hitter Megan Hosp collected 16 kills, including 10 in the last two games, and the Tologs defeated Marlborough, 3-15, 15-12, 7-15, 15-11, 15-7, in the quarterfinals of the Division IV state playoffs Saturday night at St. Francis High.

Hosp had four kills in the fifth game and six in the fourth after getting six in the previous three.

“Early in the match, I felt like I was doing so bad, I just knew I had to do something about it,” Hosp said.

Hosp collected 32 digs and Danielle Dal Ponte finished with 14 kills, 17 digs and six aces.

The Tologs, who have won six consecutive matches, got 13 kills and six blocks from Paulina Flint, and 13 digs and five blocks by Megan Hankins.

Flintridge Sacred Heart beat Marlborough for the second time in seven days, both matches taking more than two hours.

The Tologs (18-3) beat the Mustangs (19-2) in four games to win a second consecutive Southern Section Division IV-AA title.

Flintridge Sacred Heart lost a five-game decision to Marlborough during the regular season and the Tologs needed five games to beat the Mustangs for the Southern Section title last year.

Marlborough had the Tologs on their heels until the last game.

Middle blocker Lauren Killian had 21 kills, six blocks and 27 digs for the Mustangs. Kristen Hunt-Greco added 27 digs and 47 assists, and Kathleen Hentz had 18 kills.

Flintridge Sacred Heart won the fourth game in 50 minutes, took 7-0 and 13-1 leads in the fifth game before holding on.
