Suns Make Trade for McDyess

The Denver Nuggets traded disgruntled forward Antonio McDyess to the Phoenix Suns on Wednesday for five draft picks in a three-way deal that also sent guards Wesley Person and Tony Dumas from the Suns to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The Nuggets receive three first-round and two second-round picks. McDyess, the No. 2 pick in the 1995 draft who is entering the final year of his contract, was seeking a six-year deal worth more than $100 million.

The Suns, who must pay guard Kevin Johnson about $8 million for one more season and also signed free agents Clifford Robinson and Tom Chambers, have time to figure out a way to pay McDyess. Midnight (EDT) Wednesday marked the deadline for teams to rework deals before next summer.

McDyess averaged 18.3 points and 7.3 rebounds in his second year in the league. He joins another rebuilding effort in Phoenix, giving Coach Danny Ainge’s team its best inside presence since Robert Horry was traded to the Lakers in January.

Swingman Pete Myers, who played in Italy last season, returned to the NBA with the New York Knicks as a free-agent signee.

Manchester United beat Juventus, 3-2, in London to take command of its group in the Champions Cup. The victory gave Manchester the maximum six points from two games and left it three points ahead of Juventus and the Dutch club Feyenoord, which downed Kosice of Slovakia, 2-0, in Rotterdam.

Defending champion Borussia Dortmund, which upset Juventus in last season’s final, beat Sparta Prague, 4-1, to stay atop Group A with six points. Parma moved into second place with four points after downing Turkey’s Galatasaray, 2-0.

The role of a second allegedly speeding car is being investigated in a traffic accident involving three Brigham Young football players, one of whom was killed.

Sophomore defensive back Terrence Harvey, 21, was killed Monday night when he was thrown from the car when it flipped and rolled several times on I-15 near Provo. Harvey, the front-seat passenger, was the only one of the three not wearing a seat belt, investigators said.

Utah Highway patrol Trooper Wade Breur said investigators are looking into the role a Ford Probe driven by Ronald Myrick, 18, may have played in the accident.

Harvey transferred to BYU three weeks ago from Victor Valley Community College in Victorville. He will be honored in a brief memorial before BYU plays Utah State on Friday night in Provo.

Bruce Devlin, a 59-year-old Australian who won eight times on the PGA Tour, is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday in Scottsdale, Ariz., to remove his cancerous right kidney. Doctors discovered the cancer this week during an examination at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Devlin tied for 56th Sunday in the senior tour’s Emerald Coast Classic at Milton, Fla.

Mechanical gremlins continued to plague Craig Breedlove in his quest for the world land speed record and blustery weather stopped the British Thrust team.

Breedlove’s Spirit of America crew found that dirt had packed in the front center wheel, causing a vibration. The wheel was removed to make it easier to clean the other two front wheels and it was discovered that they were nicked, postponing a scheduled run.

Fourth-seeded Greg Rusedski continued his hot run with a first-round victory over David Prinosil of Germany, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, in the $975,000 Swiss Indoor tennis tournament in Basel.

Fifth-seeded Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden easily advanced over France’s Arnaud Boetsch, 6-2, 6-3, and sixth-seeded Thomas Enqvist of Sweden beat Bohdan Ulihrach of the Czech Republic, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. . . . Disgraced sportscaster Marv Albert hasn’t ruled out a job on a Tampa radio station’s “shock jock” show. Agent Evan Bell said WFLZ-FM wants Albert to broadcast three daily one-minute sports commentaries.

Detroit and Washington were awarded WNBA expansion franchises, contingent on each team securing pledges for at least 3,000 season tickets before Nov. 10. If the NBA Board of Governors approves the expansion, the league champion Houston Comets will switch to the five-team Western Conference, joining the Sparks, Phoenix, Sacramento and Utah. The new teams would become part of the Eastern Conference with New York, Charlotte and Cleveland.

Fresno State forward Daymond Forney will spend three years on probation and do 50 hours community service for his part in a fight in which a man’s jaw was broken.
