Orange Lutheran lost its top two quarterbacks but held on for a 28-25 nonleague win over University on Friday at Brea Olinda High.

After the Lancers (3-0-1) lost starting quarterback Jason Whieldon with a slight concussion in the first quarter and backup Jeff Renevier with a sprained ankle in the third, University (0-3-1) crept back into the game.

The Trojans, trailing, 28-6, early in the third quarter, rallied for three touchdowns. Quarterback Andy Dennis completed 11 of 26 attempts for 296 yards. But 256 of those came in the second half, including a 92-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Albinio.

University had a chance to take the lead when it took possession at Orange Lutheran’s 42-yard line with 22 seconds left. But the Trojans threw three incompletions and Dennis was sacked on the final attempt.

Orange Lutheran, which threw just five times in the game and once in the second half, was led by running back Dee Meza, who ran for 121 yards and three touchdowns in 22 carries.

Meza had two two-yard runs in the first half and Renevier connected with Tim Fleming on a 78-yard touchdown pass to give the Lancers a 21-6 lead at halftime.
