Uhl, Iliescu Lead Saddleback to Victory in Volleyball

Saddleback relied on the outside hitting of Whitney Uhl and Andreea Iliescu to defeat host Orange Coast, 12-15, 15-3, 15-4, 14-16, 15-12, Wednesday in Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball.

Uhl had 25 kills and Iliescu finished with 21 for Saddleback (5-0, 1-0). Jennifer Fish led Orange Coast (5-3, 0-1) with 18 kills.

In another Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball match:

Golden West 3, Riverside 0--Jana James and Mariah Marquis each had eight kills in the 15-2, 15-6, 15-9 conference-opening victory for Golden West (5-0, 1-0).

In Orange Empire Conference women’s golf:

Cypress 330, College of the Desert 340, Orange Coast 378, Irvine Valley 422--Teri Goolsby led Cypress with a four-over par 76 at Oak Glen in El Cajon. Cuyumaca’s Asa Jankler was the medalist with a 75. Cypress’ Jacque Servadio finished third with 78.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s water polo:

Orange Coast 9, Riverside 5--Ryan Dandy scored three goals to lead the Pirates (10-2-2, 4-0). Backup goalie Kai Bond made three saves.

Saddleback 7, Cypress 4--Ranked sixth in the state, Saddleback (13-4, 3-1) got three goals from Brian Weathersby and nine saves from Carlos Gonzalez.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s water polo:

Riverside 6, Orange Coast 5--Riverside scored the winner in the last minutes of the fourth quarter. Jackie Tran and Erin Murphy each scored twice for Orange Coast.

Saddleback 11, Cypress 2--Brianna Foulds scored five goals to lead Saddleback. Aimee Piper had six saves for the Gauchos, who improved to 8-9-1, 2-2.

In the South Coast Conference:

Golden West 15, Fullerton 8--Lisa Saenz led the visiting Rustlers with six goals. Fullerton (7-6, 1-2) outscored Golden West in the second half, including two, two-point goals from Stacy Jo Smith in the fourth quarter, but the Rustlers had built a 10-goal lead in the first half to ensure the victory.
