Eastern Washington Ends Montana Streak

Harry Leons passed for 424 yards and four touchdowns, helping Eastern Washington end Montana’s 30-game home winning streak, 40-35, on Saturday at Missoula, Mont.

Montana ranked second in NCAA Division I-AA, took a 28-20 lead on an eight-yard pass from Brian Ah Yat to Jeremy Watkins with 10 minutes left in the third quarter.

But No. 20 Eastern Washington scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Leons hit Jeff Ogden on touchdown pass plays of three and 67 yards, and Mike MacKenzie scored on a one-yard run to give the Eagles a 40-28 lead with 1:56 left.

The Grizzlies scored on a eight-yard pass from Ah Yat to Travis Walker in the final minute but Eastern Washington recovered Montana’s onside kick.

Eastern took a 10-0 lead on a 20-yard field goal by Josh Atwood and an 86-yard pass play from Leons to Ogden.

Josh Branen scored for Montana on a seven-yard run, but Eastern Washington built the lead to 17-7 on a 27-yard pass from Leons to Steve Correa late in the first quarter.

The Grizzlies pulled ahead, 21-17, after a 19-yard scoring pass from Ah Yat to Jim Farris and a 74-yard pass play from Ah Yat to Brian Gales with 6:16 left in the second quarter.

Atwood’s 19-yard field goal pulled Eastern Washington to within 21-20 at halftime.

Ogden caught six passes for 217 yards and Rex Prescott rushed 27 times for 166 yards as Eastern Washington amassed 658 yards.

Ah Yat completed 27 of 50 passes for 394 yards.

Weber State 16, Portland State 7--Scott Shields kicked three field goals and sparked a Wildcat defense that held the Vikings to 171 yards at Ogden, Utah.

Shields kicked field goals of 42, 51 and 32 yards and averaged 44 yards on six punts, with a long of 66 yards.

Weber State drove 84 yards for its only touchdown, an eight-yard run by Derek Poole, to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter and Shields’ first two field goals made it 13-0 at halftime.

Portland State scored on Tyrone Parsons’ 32-yard pass play to Jackie Connors in the third quarter.

Idaho State 46, Southern Utah 31--James Ferrell kicked five field goals and the Bengals scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to break a 19-19 tie in a nonconference game at Pocatello, Idaho.

Ferrell connected from 43, 37, 49, 23 and 27 yards to break the school record of four field goals set by Case deBruijn against Weber State in 1981.

Safety Trevor Bell of Idaho State had two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a 53-yard punt return for a touchdown.

The Thunderbirds (4-3) had 477 yards but committed eight turnovers.
