McCray, 36, on the Bubble

Rodney McCray, an 11-year veteran, probably won’t get a chance to play his 12th with the Clippers.

At least not at the beginning.

But Coach Bill Fitch says, based on what he has seen in training camp, he wouldn’t hesitate to call on the 36-year-old McCray in an emergency, the kind that always seem to strike the Clippers at some point in the season.

“It’s going to be tough,” Fitch said of McCray’s chances of making the club. “He’s got more tough competition at his spot than anybody else trying to make this team.

“But he’s been worth his weight in gold just being around these players in camp.

“If he doesn’t make the team and if he doesn’t go with somebody else, I’ve just got to find a way to make sure he stays in shape just in case somebody gets hurt.”

Whatever problems the Clippers take into the regular season, fatigue certainly won’t be one of them.

Heading into Friday’s opener against the Suns at Phoenix, the Clippers will enjoy their easiest week of the season. After enduring the last of the two-a-day workouts Thursday, the Clippers get a day off today and will have only single daily workouts the rest of the week.

Center Keith Closs, who missed Friday’s game to attend his grandmother’s funeral in Connecticut, is expected back this weekend, bringing the club back to full strength.

The L.A. Sports Council and the L.A. Chamber of Commerce will host their annual luncheon for the Clippers on Monday at the Biltmore Hotel at 11:30 a.m. Details: (213) 482-6352.
