Camarillo High won’t be going from first to worst.
The Scorpions, Marmonte League champions last season, won their first game of the season, defeating Simi Valley, 28-14, Friday night in a league game at Camarillo.
John Howe’s 79-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter gave the Scorpions (1-6, 1-3) a comfortable cushion.
Camarillo led, 14-0, at halftime on quarterback Garrett Valencia’s two-yard keeper and his eight-yard scoring pass to Justin Denham.
Howe led all rushers with 144 yards in 21 carries.
Simi Valley (1-6, 0-4) failed to score on five possessions in Scorpion territory before scoring two fourth-quarter touchdowns. Two drives ended on turnovers inside the Camarillo five-yard line.
Linebacker Noah Ha.ppe had two interceptions and completed a 37-yard option pass to set up the Pioneers’ first score, a 21-yard run by John Proja with 4:26 to play.
