The student staff of Saddleback College’s weekly newspaper, the Lariat, won 23 awards this month, including an award for general excellence, at the 1997 Journalism Assn. of Community Colleges Southern California Conference at Cal State Fullerton.
The college journalism program won 33 awards for newspapers published in the 1996-97 school year. Ten awards were given to its student magazine, Saddleback Ink.
Among the awards received by the Lariat were first place for headlines and inside page design.
Saddleback Ink also was honored for general excellence. The magazine’s other awards include a second-place award for illustrations and third-place awards for design/layout, cover design and a profile article.
Additionally, the Lariat is a finalist for a national Pacemaker Award this year. The award, considered the collegiate equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize, was awarded to the paper in 1989 and 1994. Also in 1994, the paper was inducted into the Associated Collegiate Press Hall of Fame.
