Alan Benes Has Shoulder Surgery
St. Louis Cardinal pitcher Alan Benes is expected to sit out the rest of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery.
Benes 9-9 with a 2.89 earned-run average in 23 starts, went on the disabled list July 25 because of a partially torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder.
The Cardinals also are concerned about another starter, Todd Stottlemyre, who also is experiencing shoulder problems. Stottlemyre missed his last turn and hasn’t pitched since Aug. 24, when he gave up seven earned runs in 5 2/3 innings in a loss to Florida.
