Hundley Suffers Elbow Injury

New York Met catcher Todd Hundley suffered a hyperextended right elbow while striking out Tuesday night and will undergo an MRI exam today.

Hundley left the game after fanning against Philadelphia’s Tyler Green in the first inning. X-rays revealed at least two bone chips and possibly three.

“If it shows the ligament’s lengthened, then it will be rest,” Hundley said of the MRI. “If it’s detached, then it’s Tommy John surgery.”

Hundley said the Met doctors told him there’s no sign of a ligament break, but it’s hard to be sure without the MRI because of swelling.

“The pain was extreme,” he said. “I haven’t felt this kind of pain all year.”

Hundley, who hit 41 home runs last year to set the major league record for homers in a season by a catcher, is batting .275 with 30 homers and 86 RBIs.

Since the Cincinnati Reds called him up on Sept. 1, Rose Jr. had two hits in his first seven at-bats heading into Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs, with four strikeouts. At double-A Chattanooga this season, his .308 average, 25 homers and 98 RBIs earned his first major-league promotion at age 27.

His dad, the all-time hits leader, knew the problem instinctively: Junior is pressing.

“I had a talk with my dad today,” Rose Jr. said. “He knew something was wrong. I’m swinging at balls I’m normally not swinging at.”
