Freshman Lingman Leads Woodbridge in Tennis

Freshman Susanna Lingman demonstrated why she is one of the top players from the county as she swept her sets to help Woodbridge to a 17-1 rout of Laguna Beach Wednesday in nonleague girls’ tennis at Irvine.

Lingman won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. The Warriors’ No. 1 doubles team of Michelle Stiefel and Natalie Mitton won their sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.

Woodbridge remained undefeated at 3-0. Laguna Beach is 0-3.

In other nonleague girls’ tennis:

Brea Olinda 17, La Quinta 1--Brea Olinda, the seventh-ranked team in Division III, won its fourth straight match.

Kelly Scanlan, the Wildcats’ No. 1 singles player, lost only three games, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0, during her sets.

La Habra 12, Los Altos 5--Amanda Eakin and Jennifer Groover, La Habra’s No. 3 doubles team, swept their matches, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0. The Highlanders are 3-0.

Newport Harbor 17, Sunny Hills 1--Newport Harbor’s Chelsea Godbey, the Sailors’ No. 1 singles player, lost only one game as she swept her sets, 6-1, 6-0, 6-1. The Sailors are 2-1.

The Sailors’ No. 1 doubles team of Erica Nelson and Brooke Taylor also swept their sets, 6-0, 6-1, 6-0.

Troy 13, El Dorado 5--El Dorado, the fifth-ranked team in Division III, was upset by visiting Troy (3-0). The Warriors’ No. 2 doubles team of Lori Judd and Sarah Riley swept their sets, 7-5, 6-4, 6-3.

Tustin 14, Bolsa Grande 4--Mirei Hayashi and Cindy Nguyen swept in No. 1 doubles to help Tustin (4-0) win. Bolsa Grande is 0-2.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

La Quinta 3, Estancia 2--La Quinta earned its first victory of the season by beating Estancia in the fifth game, 16-14.

The Aztecs (1-2) lost the first game, 11-15, but then tied the match with a 15-13 victory. Estancia won the third game, 15-13, but La Quinta won, 15-12, to force the fifth game.

Outside hitter Heidi Foster had 14 kills for the Aztecs and setter Tina Nguyen had 28 assists.

Loara 3, Anaheim 1--Jessica Miles had 27 kills as Loara won, 15-12, 10-15, 15-10, 15-6.

Long Beach Wilson 3, Los Alamitos 2--Stephanie Gamst had 43 assists for Los Alamitos. Wilson (1-0) won the first two games, 15-12, 16-14.

On the verge of defeat, the Griffins battled back to tie the match by winning, 15-12, 15-8. Wilson won the last game, 15-8.

Kira Whelan and Valerie Harris each had 12 kills for Los Alamitos.

The Griffins are 0-2.

Santiago 3, Santa Ana 1--Hinano Tekurio had 15 kills as Santiago squeezed by Santa Ana, 16-14, 6-15, 16-14, 17-15. Malia Tekurio had 15 assists for Santiago (2-1).

Trabuco Hills 3, Palos Verdes Peninsula 0--Amy Congo had 11 kills in a victory for Trabuco Hills, 15-9, 15-1, 15-7. Amy Eversoll had 15 assists for Trabuco Hills (3-0).

Woodbridge 3, Long Beach Millikan 2--Woodbridge outside hitter Erin Denniston had 25 kills as the Warriors rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Long Beach Millikan.

The Warriors (2-0) won the first game, 15-11. Millikan dominated Games 2 and 3 with 15-7 and 15-4 victories.

Woodbridge won the last two games, 15-13, 16-14.

In nonleague water polo:

Canyon 13, Troy 4--Eddio Colson had a career-high 17 saves to help Canyon win. Scott Butler scored four goals and Brian Blagg and Mike Johnson had three goals each to lead Canyon (2-0).

El Dorado 11, La Verne Bonita 9--Brett Benson had five goals in a victory for El Dorado. Teammate Jeff Johnson scored three goals for the Golden Hawks.

Esperanza 10, Sunny Hills 5--Travis Vayssie scored three of his four goals in the fourth quarter for Esperanza (3-3). Jeff Burmeister scored three goals for the Aztecs.

La Quinta 16, Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe 10--Stephen Marquez had 10 goals as La Quinta rolled past Santa Fe Springs Santa Fe. Goalie Charles Raquipiso had 16 saves for La Quinta.

Marina 14, Westminster 5--Chris Shanley scored seven goals for Marina (1-0).

Santa Ana 10, Pacifica 8--Trailing, 8-7, Santa Ana scored three fourth-quarter goals to defeat Pacifica (0-2). Danny Serna tied the score and Omar Tenorio scored the go-ahead goal for Santa Ana (1-0).

Ivan Hernandez, who finished with seven goals, scored the third and final goal of the quarter.
