Cruz and Millar Selected Minor League All-Stars

Jacob Cruz, who graduated from Channel Islands High, and Kevin Millar, who attended Hart, were named to Baseball Weekly’s 1997 minor league all-star team.

Cruz was an outfielder for the San Francisco Giants’ triple-A Phoenix affiliate, while Millar played first base for the Florida Marlins’ double-A team in Portland, Maine.

Receiving honorable mention were outfielder Mike Glendenning, who plays in the Giants’ organization and attended Crespi High and Pierce College, second baseman J.P. Roberge, a Dodger farmhand who went to St. Francis and USC, first basemen Robert Fick, who plays in the Detroit Tigers’ organization and attended Cal State Northridge, and first baseman Nate Dishington, who went to Hoover and plays in the St. Louis Cardinals’ organization.

Cruz control: Cruz, who has been called up by the Giants, reached base by hit or walk in 54 consecutive games for Phoenix, a minor-league high this season.

Moving on: Ginni Giles, a forward for the North Hollywood High girls’ basketball team, said she will enroll at Agoura High today.

Giles, a senior, was a key reserve last year for the Huskies, who claimed the Mid-Valley League title.

Skill position: Billy Andrade, a 10-year veteran on the PGA Tour, has been added to the field for the EMC Golf Skills Challenge on Nov. 3 at Ojai Valley Inn and Spa.

Andrade joins Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez, Peter Jacobsen, Jesper Parnevik, Jim Furyk and two-time defending champion Brad Faxon in the field. One player has yet to be announced.

The players will compete in nine skills competitions for a purse of $500,000. NBC will televise the event on Dec. 13 and 14.
