Doubles Teams Make Points for Granada Hills
Jasmin Dao and Kelley Takeshita weren’t at their best, but the rest of the Granada Hills High girls’ tennis team was just fine.
Despite losses by their top two singles players, the Highlanders rallied for a 5-2 nonconference victory Thursday at Van Nuys.
Michal Zeituni won at No. 3 singles and Michelle Heiser won at No. 4 for the Highlanders (1-0).
Van Nuys (0-1) picked up victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles when Leslie Musser beat Dao, 8-0, and Diana Friedland topped Takeshita, 8-3.
But the Highlanders’ top two doubles teams--Nicole Frydman and Julie Kand at No. 1, Valerie Ramirez and Ilah Layosa at No. 2--rallied from early deficits to win back control of the match.
Hart 14, Ventura 4--The No. 2 team of Kristen Semelsberger and Meredith Simmons recorded the only doubles sweep for the Indians (3-0) in a nonleague match at Ventura.
No. 1 player Jenny Munroe and No. 2 Bethanie Campbell swept their singles sets for Hart, ranked eighth in Division II.
Brentwood 10, Calabasas 8--No. 1 singles player Shervin Saedinia won all three of her sets, but the Coyotes (4-1) fell to Brentwood (4-0), the top-ranked team in Division V.
Eagle Rock 5, Taft 2--Sara Baddin and Avid Farahani were the sole bright spots for the host Toreadors (0-1) in a nonconference match, Baddin winning at No. 2 singles and Farahani winning at No. 3.
Kennedy 6, Monroe 1--Sabrina Warda was an 8-2 victor at No. 1 singles for the Golden Cougars (1-0) in a nonconference match at Monroe (1-0).
Camarillo 10, Simi Valley 8--Lauren Gaona swept, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1, 6-1, at No. 1 singles for the Scorpions (1-1, 1-0) in a Marmonte League opener at Simi Valley.
Harvard-Westlake 11, Marymount 7--Lindsy Forbess swept her sets at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, and Chelsea Dillon and Kelly Hanker also swept, 6-1, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 1 doubles, in a nonleague match for the host Wolverines (2-1).
Royal 15, Newbury Park 3--Sisters Kim Tran and Annie Tran swept their singles sets for the Highlanders (3-1, 1-0) in a Marmonte League opener at Newbury Park.
Rio Mesa 12, Carpinteria 6--Bridget Ragan won her sets at No. 1 singles for the Spartans (2-1) in a nonleague match at Carpinteria.
Agoura 12, Thousand Oaks 6--The host Chargers (3-0, 1-0) took eight of nine doubles sets in a Marmonte League opener.
Lauren Hahn and Casey Ruby were 6-2, 6-1, 6-0 winners at No. 1 doubles, while Bettina Loh and Darcy Utter went 6-3, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Westlake d. Channel Islands, 15-2, 15-7, 15-4--Erika Denison had 15 kills for the Warriors (3-0) in a Marmonte League opener at Westlake.
Royal d. Newbury Park, 15-13, 15-5, 15-7--Courtney Guerra had 12 kills and Sherisa Livingston added 10 for the Highlanders (3-0, 1-0) in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park.
Simi Valley d. Camarillo, 15-7, 17-15, 15-3--Summer Page had seven kills for the Pioneers (3-0, 1-0) in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.
La Canada d. Notre Dame, 15-6, 15-8, 15-5--Emily Dalbeck had 12 kills for the Spartans (2-0) in a nonleague match at Notre Dame.
L.A. Baptist d. Calabasas, 15-6, 15-8, 15-10--Gloria Erickson had nine of her 21 kills and Kristen Jensen had eight of her 19 kills in the third game for the host Knights (3-0) in a nonleague match.
Van Nuys d. Palisades, 15-13, 11-15, 15-5, 15-4--Angela Eckmier had 15 kills and seven aces for the Wolves (2-0) in a nonconference match at Palisades.
Poly d. Eagle Rock, 15-2, 15-2, 15-3--Gaby Gallardo had eight kills for the Parrots (2-0) in a nonconference match at Eagle Rock.
Monroe d. Taft, 13-15, 15-11, 15-0, 15-13--Nanette Janian and Leslie Berastein had nine kills each for the Vikings (1-1) in a nonleague match at Taft.
Trisha Bratford had 11 kills for the Toreadors (1-1).
Buckley d. L.A. Lutheran, 5-15, 15-5, 15-11, 15-10--Amy Brown had eight kills for the Griffins (3-1) in a nonleague match at L.A. Lutheran.
BOYS’ WATER POLO
Harvard-Westlake 14, Canyon 5--Phillip Spataru had four goals and Mike Crosby had two goals for the Wolverines (6-0) in a Millikan Tournament second-round game.
