Second Opinion Costs Bears’ Spellman
Chicago defensive end Alonzo Spellman, who missed two days of practice while seeking a second opinion on a shoulder injury, turned up at the Bears’ training camp on Friday and underwent treatment.
Bear Coach Dave Wannstedt said Spellman will be fined for missing practice because he did not follow proper procedure.
“Every player is entitled to get a second opinion and he’s no different,” Wannstedt said “But he missed two days of practice and that’s critical.”
Spellman apparently was unconvinced by a negative MRI reading and optimistic diagnosis from team doctors.
Wannstedt said Spellman will miss Sunday’s game in Dallas because of the injury.
The Bears also said cornerback James Burton will sit out three to four weeks after suffering a hairline fracture in his right leg during practice Thursday.

Washington running back Terry Allen, who broke his left thumb during the Redskins’ season opener against Carolina and is still wearing a cast, said he plans to play against Jacksonville Sunday.
