Munroe Leads the Way for Hart

Jenny Munroe, No. 1 singles player, swept three sets and the No. 3 doubles team of Nancy Hwang and Jamie Ladd won two sets in tiebreakers to help the Hart High girls’ tennis team defeat Glendale, 13-5, in a nonleague match Friday at Hart.

Munroe, a freshman and the daughter of Hart girls’ basketball Coach Dave Munroe, improved to 14-1 for the Indians (5-0).

Hwang and Ladd beat Glendale’s No. 1 doubles team of Jean Kim and Sharon Kim, 7-6 (7-2), and trailed the No. 3 team of Janny Chang and Julie Kim, 4-1, in the tiebreaker before rallying to win, 7-6 (7-4).

No. 3 singles player Marcela DeVivo won two of three sets for Glendale (3-2).

In another girls’ tennis match:

Simi Valley 18, La Reina 0--Katie Franklin of Simi Valley did not lose a game in a three-set victory over Erica Molina in a nonleague match at Simi Valley. Margo O’Donnell and Andrea Espinoza of Simi Valley dropped only two games in a three-set doubles victory over Erin Meister and Jen Szabo.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Burroughs 9, Royal 8--Burroughs goalie Nick Triandos made two of his four saves in the final minute and the Indians hung on for a consolation victory in the Rowland tournament at Barnes Memorial Park in Monterey Park.

Brian Carsten scored four goals and Loran Leidinger and Mike Barrera each added two for Burroughs (5-4). Jason Falitz had the Indians’ other goal.

Leidinger leads the Indians with 36 goals this season, followed by Carsten with 28.

Ryan Apperson and Tony Johnson each scored a goal in the fourth quarter for Royal (5-3) to bring the Highlanders within 9-8 before Triandos shut them down.

Royal goalie Garrett Herzer had 10 saves and held the Indians scoreless in the fourth quarter.

Buena tournament--Buena advanced to today’s semifinals with pool-play victories over Santa Maria, 17-7, and Atascadero, 19-1, at Ventura High.

Eric Nisbet scored a combined nine goals, including six against Atascadero. Buena (5-3) plays Ventura today at 10:40 a.m. at Ventura College. Lompoc and Righetti play a semifinal at 10:40 at Ventura High. The winners play for the championship at 1:10 p.m. at Ventura High.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

St. Bonaventure d. Moorpark, 15-12, 15-8, 15-11--Kristen Jones had 10 kills and seven digs and Stacey Howard recorded all nine of her kills in the third game to help the Seraphs (4-0) beat the Musketeers (4-1) in a nonleague match at St. Bonaventure.
