BRIGHAM YOUNG FOOTBALL

* County connections: Kevin Feterik of Los Alamitos starts at quarterback for the Cougars (2-1). Another county product, wide receiver David Castleton of Mater Dei, is a redshirt.

* Worth noting: Feterik passed for 216 yards and a touchdown Saturday in a 19-18 victory over SMU at the Cotton Bowl. Feterik, a sophomore, replaced Paul Shoemaker at quarterback during BYU’s opener against Washington and has been the starter since. This season, he has passed for 760 yards and three touchdowns.

LONG BEACH STATE VOLLEYBALL

* County connections: Setter Misty May, from Newport Harbor High, is among the key players for Long Beach, which is 11-1 and 3-0 in the Big West Conference.

* Worth noting: May, the Big West player of the year last season, is among conference leaders in hitting percentage, assists and digs. Long Beach needed only three games in each match to defeat Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine last week.

* Appearing locally: The 49ers, ranked second in the country, host No. 10 Pacific at Long Beach State’s Pyramid at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

VILLANOVA FOOTBALL

* County connections: Villanova has 18 players from California, four of whom are from Orange County. Wide receivers Brad and Brian Finneran and right guard Stan Bennett are from Santa Margarita and receiver Stephen Ward is from Servite. Two other players are redshirts.

* Worth noting: Brian Finneran is expected to become the team’s all-time leading receiver this week against James Madison. Finneran has 185 receptions for 2,822 yards; Bob Brady’s school records are 187 receptions for 2,901 yards. This season, Finneran has 16 catches for 339 yards and five touchdowns. His twin brother, Brad, has 12 catches for 166 yards. Ward is the team’s fourth receiver, with two catches for 21 yards. Villanova is 3-0 and ranked fourth in Division I-AA.
