Swanson Homers Twice as Western Beats Katella

Ben Swanson hit two home runs and drove in five runs as Western beat Katella, 14-3, Monday in a quarterfinal game of the Kennedy Easter Tournament.

Western (9-3-1) also got offensive help from catcher Alex Taylor, who was three for four and scored three times.

In the Century League:

El Modena 6, Santa Ana Valley 5--Freshman Travis Hertzberg (3-1) went five innings, giving up two hits and three runs to earn the victory and Paul Beaudreau doubled home two runs and earned his third save for host El Modena (6-6, 3-3).

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 8, Trabuco Hills 6--Sean Fluent hit a grand slam in the first and Jesse Gallup pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts for visiting Dana Hills (7-5, 2-3).

In nonleague baseball:

Los Amigos 11, Whittier Pioneer 9--Jesus Rodarte hit a pinch-hit two-run homer in the top of the seventh to break a 9-9 tie for for Los Amigos (7-5, 1-3). Adam Shaeffer had two home runs with four RBIs for the Lobos.

In the Michelle Carew softball tournament:

Villa Park 4, Elsinore 3 (9)--Sara Hannigan’s two-run single broke a 3-3 tie in the ninth and propelled Villa Park into today’s quarterfinal game against Sunny Hills.

Canyon 3, Rowland Heights Rowland 1--Canyon rallied from a 1-0 deficit with two outs in the seventh inning, tying it on Amber Boeg’s single and taking the lead on Amber Kolle’s two-run triple.

Orange Lutheran 3, Orange 0--Jessica Edwards threw a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts, including a stretch of 15 consecutive starting with the second batter she faced. Edwards (5-2) has already struck out 100 batters this season for Orange Lutheran.

In nonleague softball:

Pacifica 8-9, Boca Raton (Fla.) 0-0--Amanda Freed struck out the first 15 and pitched a no-hitter in the first game for host Pacifica (11-1). She finished with 17 strikeouts.
