N. Hollywood, Poly Unable to Settle Score

Nobody likes a tie, but Poly High and North Hollywood had plenty to be upset about after finishing deadlocked, 4-4, in an East Valley League game called in the top of the 12th inning at Poly High.

Poly (12-4-2, 7-2-2 in Valley Pac-8 Conference play) was unhappy after losing a two-run lead in the seventh inning.

But North Hollywood (12-8-1, 8-1-1) was the one protesting moments after taking a 5-4 lead on a triple by Ismael Rangsiyawong in the 12th.

Poly Coach Chuck Schwal replaced pitcher Abraham Gonzalez with Salvador Trujillo. The sun dropped below the horizon as Gonzalez warmed up and the game was called just before 7:30 p.m., 4 1/2 hours after it started.

Schwal’s move could hardly be considered a delaying tactic for Poly. North Hollywood had only one out and the Parrots still had to bat in the bottom of the inning.

Jerrit Redlich tied the score, 4-4, with a two-strike, two-out triple that scored Rangsiyawong in the seventh inning. Redlich was at the plate with Rangsiyawong on third base when the game was called.

Trujillo allowed two hits and struck out five in six innings after replacing starter Carlos Reguengo. Edgar Pinedas and Marcus Clenance held Poly to six hits.

The Parrots took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when Juan Guerrero walked and Manny Flores was hit by a pitch, both with the bases loaded. Poly added a run in the fourth.

Jose Figueroa’s single drove in Redlich to cut the lead, 3-2, in the sixth, but Poly answered with a run-scoring single by George Felix.
