Police Shoot Man They Say Had Gun
Cypress police shot and wounded a man who allegedly pointed a handgun at officers during a brief confrontation at Forest Lawn Memorial Parks & Mortuaries on Sunday, officials said.
Police did not identify the man and said they were having trouble reaching his relatives to confirm his identity, Police Sgt. David Birozy said.
Officials said they were called to the cemetery about 2:45 p.m. by an employee who reported that her former boyfriend had made threats against her. The woman, whose identification was not released, told police her ex-boyfriend was at the cemetery at the time and was threatening to kill her, officials said.
Officers arrived and confronted the man.
When four officers ordered him to stop, Birozy said, the man dropped to the ground and took a handgun from a duffel bag.
“Despite repeated commands from the officers, the suspect brought the handgun up and pointed it at them,” Birozy said. “The officers fired at the suspect, striking him twice, once in the leg and once in the torso.”
The wounded man was taken to Long Beach Memorial Hospital. He was in surgery late Sunday, Birozy said.
The shooting is under investigation by police and the Orange County district attorney’s office, which is routine in officer-involved shootings.
