Lightning Fire Burns 30 Acres in Forest

A lightning strike that ignited dry grass and brush caused a fire that charred 30 acre north of Ojai in Los Padres National Forest, officials said Thursday.

The brush fire began about 5:10 p.m. Wednesday near the Potrero Seco camping area 20 miles northwest of Ojai off California 33, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

The blaze was contained at midnight Wednesday and total cleanup was expected to be completed by 1 p.m. today, Forest Service officials said.

There were no injuries reported. In the early stages of the fire, however, an uninhabited hunting cabin, two out-buildings and two cars were destroyed. At the fire’s peak Wednesday, 110 firefighters and two air crews were on the lines.

On Thursday afternoon, about 50 firefighters and one helicopter were participating in the cleanup, Forest Service officials said.
