The Panthers Gold 18-and-under team defeated the Orange County Batbusters, 1-0, to win the Amateur Softball Assn. national championships in Phoenix.

Jennifer Sharron, a graduate of Thousand Oaks High who plays at Notre Dame, was the winning pitcher in the final and was 2-0 in the tournament.

Jessica Mendoza, a graduate of Camarillo, Mackenzie Vandergeest of La Reina and J.T. Tyler of Burroughs also played for the Panthers, who were 6-0 in the tournament.

DIVING

Troy Dumais of Ventura, executing the most semifinal attempts with the highest degrees of difficulty Friday, will carry the most points into the final round today in the U.S. Championships in Atlanta.

Dumais, a Buena High graduate and freshman at Texas, has 239.46 points, followed by P.J. Bogart with 225.36 and David Pichler at 214.65.

BASEBALL

Matt Bernstein and Danny Greene each had a double and scored two runs, and Jared Edrosolan struck out 10 in 6 2/3 innings to lead Conejo Valley to a 7-5 victory over Broward County, Fla., on Friday in the first round of the Big League World Series (ages 17-18) at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Steve Guerrero, a two-time All-Western State Conference outfielder at Valley College, has decided to attend Chico State, an NCAA Division II power.

Andy Campanella hit a three-run home run to help the Sylmar Stallions in an 8-4 victory over Seattle in the U.S. Amateur Baseball Federation 18-and-under World Series at Southwest College in Chula Vista.

The Stallions (10-0), who scored five runs in the first inning, advanced to the championship game at 2 p.m. today.

Campanella, a graduate of Crespi High, had four runs batted in and Chris Martinez (Chaminade) had two hits and one RBI.

ICE HOCKEY

Luc Robitaille of the Kings will be the primary instructor at the ninth annual L.A. Kings Youth Hockey Camp beginning Monday at the Iceoplex in North Hills.

The camp is for youngsters 6-16.

Others expected to participate include Rob Blake, Sean O’Donnell and Sandy Moger of the Kings, and former Kings Jim Fox, Daryl Evans and Mark Hardy.
