CROSS-COUNTRY

The West regional high school cross-country championships will be held at Mt. San Antonio College on Dec. 5, after being held at Woodward Park in Fresno for 18 years.

Mt. SAC has hosted a high school invitational for 50 years and the Southern Section championships for 17 years, but this will be the first West regional.

The meet was moved because the husband and wife team of Bill and Judy Cockerham stepped down as co-meet directors in December, citing a lack of time to organize the meet, which drew nearly 3,000 runners last year.

Meet director Doug Todd, the director of cross-country and track and field at Mt. SAC, said moving the meet to Southern California could increase this year’s entries to 5,000.

He said the 5,000-meter West regional course will be nearly identical to the traditional three-mile course at Mt. SAC, but that the final 300 meters will be on the track.
