2 Men Shot in Apparent Gang Confrontation
Two 19-year-old men were shot on a residential street in Port Hueneme Friday night in what police believe was a gang confrontation.
Juan Lujan was shot while between two parked cars in the 400 block of 5th Street, and Adrian Mendoza was hit as he stood in a nearby driveway, Port Hueneme Police Lt. Fernando Estrella said.
The men were taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard after the 9:20 p.m. shootings. Mendoza was released after being treated for leg and hand wounds. Lujan was in stable condition Saturday night after surgery for a chest wound.
Both refused to cooperate with officers, so details of the shootings were sketchy. The men are apparently members of the same gang and live in the Oxnard-Port Hueneme area, officers said.
Witnesses said youths with shaved heads ran from the area after the shootings. Police canvassed the neighborhood and a nearby park on foot and by air, Estrella said.
A trail of blood leading from the shooting scene prompted officers to search for a possible third victim, but as of Saturday night, no suspects and no additional victims had been located.
About two dozen neighbors gathered Friday night behind yellow crime-scene tape as officers collected evidence. The county Fire Department sent a floodlight truck that illuminated the street during the investigation.
Anyone with information is asked to call officers at 986-6530.
