Bayer Scores 25 as Mater Dei Wins Opener

Mike Bayer scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Mater Dei to a 65-55 victory over San Clemente at the Glendora Triple Crown Classic Tuesday at Glendora High.

Bayer, a 6-7 senior forward, made 10 of 14 shots from the field, Steve Scoggin scored 18 points and Cedric Bozeman had 13 for the Monarchs (1-0).

Mitch Pierce scored 20 points to lead San Clemente (0-1).

While the game between the Monarchs and Tritons was part of the Glendora tournament, both teams agreed to count it as a South Coast League game.

In another tournament game:

Sonora 87, Los Alamitos 74--Bim Okunrinboye had 26 points and eight rebounds and Marqui Worthy scored 21 points for Sonora, which outscored Los Alamitos, 25-14, in the second quarter to take a 10-point halftime lead.

In the Coyote Classic boys’ basketball tournament:

Downey 67, Magnolia 53--Sohayl Saboori scored 12 points and Geoffrey Clayton added 11 in the pool-play loss for Magnolia (0-1).

Frank Velazquez led all scorers with 21 points for Downey (1-0).

El Modena 49, Lakewood 42--Joseph Cortez scored 13 points to lead El Modena (1-1) in the consolation game. El Modena fell behind 27-25, at the half, but outscored Lakewood, 11-5, in the third to take the lead.

Andrew Pleick scored 27 points to lead the Griffins (0-1).

In nonleague boys’ basketball:

Newport Harbor 55, Edison 45--Matt Jameson had 18 points and seven assists for visiting Newport Harbor (1-0).

Laguna Hills 85, Trabuco Hills 74--Senior Josh Pierson scored 24 of his 35 points in the first half as Laguna Hills took a 50-42 lead. Pierson made five three-pointers for the Hawks (1-0).

St. Michael’s 43, Liberty Christian 38--Jon Miller scored 13 points for visiting St. Michael’s (1-0). Sergio Andonian scored 20 points for Liberty Christian (0-1).

In the Irvine/Century girls’ basketball tournament:

Sonora 74, Santa Ana Valley 42--Brandi Davis had 14 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists for Sonora (1-0) in the pool-play game. Sarah Fister contributed 18 points and nine rebounds for the Raiders.

In nonleague girls’ basketball:

Marina 50, Mission Viejo 41--Karyn Fierst had 16 points, seven steals and six assists and Amy Wheeler contributed six points and 12 rebounds for host Marina (1-0).

Westminster 48, Canyon 45--Holly Armstrong scored 16 points and made five of six free throws in the final three minutes to help seal the victory for host Westminster (1-0).

In nonleague boys’ soccer:

Orange 2, Trabuco Hills 1--Augustin Garcia and Rafael Garcia scored second-half goals within three minutes of each other to break a scoreless tie for the visiting Panthers (1-1). Kit Hager scored with six minutes remaining for Trabuco Hills (0-1).

In nonleague girls’ soccer:

Bolsa Grande 3, Orange 2--Vicente Ortiz scored two goals and Amy Dabalac had one for Bolsa Grande (1-0), which won its first game since the 1995/96 season.

Corona del Mar 1, Laguna Hills 0--Kelly Halley scored 10 minutes into the second half off an assist from Meghan Bryan and goalkeeper Britta Bogle posted her second consecutive shutout for host Corona del Mar (2-0).

Cypress 2, Marina 1--Nicole Woiemberghe, on an assist by Julie Speche, tied the score in the first half and Cypress teammate Rebekah Rogers, with an assist by Gina McAskill, scored the winner midway in the second half.

Estancia 1, Westminster 0--Yvette Ramirez scored the only goal off a corner kick in the 35th minute for Estancia (1-0).

Sonora 2, La Mirada 0--Shannon Bryant scored midway through the second half and Tina Fodor added another goal with two minutes remaining for host Sonora (1-0).

Whittier California 1, La Habra 1--Liz Malm’s first-half goal gave La Habra the lead until California tied the score 20 minutes in the second half.

In nonleague girls’ water polo:

Marina 9, Capistrano Valley 7--Marissa Nelson scored five goals for Marina (1-0) at Saddleback College. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mix made nine saves to anchor the Viking defense, which held Ashley Stachowski to one goal on a four-meter penalty shot.

Cori Ehrlich scored two goals for Capistrano Valley (0-1).

Newport Harbor 10, Long Beach Wilson 2--Jocelyn Manderino scored three of her five goals in the second to help host Newport Harbor (1-0) to a 6-1 lead at halftime. Manderino also had two assists and three steals.
