Saddleback, Golden West Advance in State Volleyball Tournament

Kelly Webb and Gina Stivers led Saddleback to a 15-7, 15-0, 15-7 victory over Foothill in the first round of the state community college women’s volleyball championships Friday.

Webb had 13 kills and Stivers had 12. Richelle Danet had 39 assists for Saddleback, the second-ranked team in Southern California. Saddleback is making its second consecutive appearance in the tournament after a 19-year drought.

In another state championship match:

Golden West 3, San Joaquin Delta 0--Megan Coolbaugh had 11 kills for Golden West (24-0), which won, 15-5, 15-3, 15-2. Delta finished 15-2. The Rustlers will play Long Beach today in the second round.

In the Grossmont men’s basketball tournament:

Santa Ana 83, Barstow 69--Chris Mattice scored 37 points and was 16 of 16 from the free-throw line for Santa Ana. Mattice has made 29 consecutive free throws in his last three games.

In the Orange Coast Kiwanis men’s basketball tournament:

Imperial Valley 81, Golden West 69--Rashard Harris scored a game-high 23 points to lead host Imperial Valley. Teammate Christian Lopez had 13 points and 14 rebounds.

Robert Ward had 13 points and Stephen Hunter had 11 for the Rustlers.

Orange Coast 66, Cypress 53--Peter Martinelli and Terrail Zoller each scored 13 points to lead Orange Coast, which advances to play Long Beach in the final at 7 tonight.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Saddleback 72, Mt. San Antonio 69--Down six at halftime, Saddleback (1-5) went on a 15-0 run to go up 58-45 with 9 1/2 minutes left. With eight seconds left, Mt. San Antonio (3-5) had the ball but could not get off a shot.

In the Cuesta women’s basketball tournament:

Orange Coast 79, Bakersfield 74--Orange Coast held on to a 16-point halftime lead, despite Bakersfield’s 8-2 run in the second half. Erin Tomlinson scored 22 points for Orange Coast.
