Oxnard High Junior Wins Scholarship

* Eric Lane, a junior at Oxnard High School, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the McDonald’s Pride and Leadership for African-American Youth program. He was one of 20 high school juniors chosen throughout Southern California to receive the award. The students were honored for demonstrating “exceptional leadership, character, community service and scholarship.”

New Library Foundation Board Member * Pauline Mercado has been elected to the Ojai Valley Library Foundation board of directors. She will head the foundation’s committee to design and implement a communitywide needs assessment, a blueprint for future efforts to strengthen library services in the Ojai Valley. Mercado is also a member of the Ojai Parks and Recreation Commission.

Elderly Assistance Group Receives Grant * Volunteers Assisting the Elderly has received a $7,500 grant from the Wood-Claeyssens Foundation. The money will be used for in-home support of frail elderly in Ventura and Santa Paula who may be at risk of premature placement in care facilities. The Santa Barbara-based foundation provides support to health, social services and nonprofit cultural organizations in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
