Chaffey 35, Moorpark 28--Moorpark scored two fourth-quarter touchdowns, the last with 2:30 remaining, but failed to move the ball on its final possession after recovering an on-side kick in the Southern California Bowl at Chaffey.

Darrick Darby’s 10-yard touchdown run pulled the Raiders to within 35-28, and they got the ball back at midfield on the kickoff with 2:24 to play. But after gaining only two yards in three plays, Bryan Spencer was sacked on fourth down with 1:15 to play.

“The day belonged to Chaffey,” Moorpark Coach Jim Bittner said. “They played us well and we only played half a game.”

Moorpark (9-2) trailed, 21-7, at halftime and Chaffey (9-2) extended its lead to 28-7 on a three-yard touchdown run by Paul LaValle midway through the third quarter.

The Raiders answered on their next possession when Spencer found Ross Randolph with a 25-yard touchdown pass.

Chaffey quarterback Matt Georgia scored what turned out to be the winning touchdown four seconds into the fourth quarter on a five-yard run to give the Panthers a 35-14 lead.

On its next possession, Moorpark drove 80 yards in two minutes to score on a one-yard run by Carl Richardson with 12:43 to play.

The run-oriented Raiders rushed for only 130 yards, led by Darby with 72 yards in seven carries.

“I had two unexpected things happen,” Bittner said. “I didn’t expect their offense to move the ball, and I didn’t expect their defense to shut us down. I really did not believe they could stop our running game.”
