Mt. San Jacinto 42, Canyons 16--Running back David Minnich scored two touchdowns and the Eagles took advantage of four Canyons turnovers to score 35 second-half points in the McDonald’s Community College Bowl at Antelope Valley College.

Minnich gave Mt. San Jacinto (9-2) a 14-10 lead 51 seconds into the second half when he scored on a 55-yard pass play from Damon Puckett.

Puckett increased the lead to 21-10 when he completed a 13-yard touchdown pass to J.D. Marcus in the third quarter.

Trailing, 21-16, the Cougars (7-4) attempted a double pass at the Mt. San Jacinto 36. But Tim Feirfeil’s pass was deflected, intercepted and returned 53 yards for a touchdown by Sheldon King with 13:28 to play.

“I saw two people wide open downfield, but I couldn’t grip the ball,” said Feirfeil, a wide receiver who was selected Canyons’ outstanding player of the game after catching seven passes for 76 yards and one touchdown. “By the time I found the grip, it was too late.”

Kevin Carrasco, who completed 30 of 50 passes for 291 yards, gave Canyons a 7-0 lead when he hit Feirfeil with a nine-yard scoring pass with 8:46 left in the second quarter.

Mt. San Jacinto, which didn’t gain a first down until late in the second quarter, tied the score, 7-7, when Minnich ran one yard for a touchdown with 2:05 left in the first half.

Minnich, who rushed for 126 yards in 22 carries and caught four passes for 86 yards and one touchdown, was selected outstanding player for Mt. San Jacinto.

Heloyt Cervantes kicked a 42-yard field goal with six seconds left in the half to give Canyons a 10-7 lead. The ball hit the crossbar and bounced over.

Canyons outgained Mt. San Jacinto in total yards, 348-325.
