Reseda Soccer Team Goes for Double Dip

Share

The Reseda High boys’ soccer team improved to 3-0 with a pair of victories at the Burroughs tournament Saturday, defeating Glendale, 2-0, and Newbury Park, 2-1, at Burroughs High.

Reseda, the defending City Section champion, defeated Grant, 8-3, Friday in a Valley Pac-8 Conference opener. The Regents played Glendale less than 20 hours later.

In that game, Reseda used a Glendale own goal in the 55th minute and another by Evan Corey with two minutes remaining to claim victory. Glendale (1-2) had several prime scoring chances.

With about five minutes to play, Glendale’s Edgar Manvelyan was fouled but nonetheless broke in alone on the Reseda goal. An official halted the play, ignoring that a foul typically is not called when it negates an advantage held by the fouled player.

A minute later, a Glendale player ignored a pass play shouted to him by Coach Loi Phan for an indirect kick 20 yards from the Reseda goal. The player instead blasted the ball into the goal, but because no other player had touched the shot, it was negated.

“We had guys who weren’t listening and it cost us,” Phan said.
