Ventura Leaves Newbury in Park

Alex Gientke had 20 points and 11 rebounds for Ventura High in a 72-47 pool-play victory Thursday over Newbury Park in the Buena girls’ basketball tournament.

Christine Gleisburg had 14 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocked shots, and Renee Jimenez had 16 points, including four three-pointers, for Ventura (3-0).

Hart 53, Santa Clara 45--The Indians switched to a half-court trap in the second quarter and built a 20-point lead with six minutes remaining in pool play at the Buena tournament.

Senior center Briana Kentfield had 16 points for Hart (2-1), which will play Buena tonight at 7 p.m.

Christina Sanchez made five of six free throws and had 13 points for the Indians.

Glendale 46, Lancaster 34--Evette Petrosian scored 17 points for the Dynamiters (5-0) in a second-round victory at the Valencia tournament.

Diane Everett had 10 points and Candace Kirnon had eight points and 12 rebounds for Lancaster (1-4).

Simi Valley 59, Pomona 24--Jamie Sturdivant had 12 points and six assists, and Molly Little had 11 points for the Pioneers (4-1) in a consolation game in the St. Lucy’s tournament.

Canyon 66, Littlerock 59--Latricia Fleming made 14 of 21 shots and had 34 points and 10 rebounds for the Cowboys in a second-round victory at the Valencia tournament.

Justina Kahaku added 12 points for Canyon (3-2).

Jolene Haywood scored 21 points for the Lobos (5-4), Kristel Jones had 15 and Lizette Rams finished with 12.

Grant 44, Cleveland 41--Lealie Mui had 19 points, five steals and three assists, and the Lancers won a nonleague game at Cleveland.

Krystal Clay and Alexis Westherspoon had 11 rebounds apiece for Grant (4-4).

Harvard-Westlake 77, Santa Maria St. Joseph 49--Omelogo Udeze scored 31 points for the Wolverines in a Nordhoff tournament pool-play victory.

Verona Brooks scored 18 points for Harvard-Westlake (4-1).
