Tech Not Wrecked in Win

Jason Floyd and Jason Collier both scored 22 points as Georgia Tech took a hard-fought 76-63 victory over Wofford on Wednesday night.

Perhaps experiencing a letdown after a victory over Georgia on Sunday, the Yellow Jackets did not build a comfortable lead until Floyd made a three-point shot with 2:31 to play for a 70-57 lead.

The competition for Tech (7-1) will be much more fierce when it plays third-ranked Kentucky at the Georgia Dome on Saturday and then hosts No. 7 North Carolina on Tuesday in the Jackets’ Atlantic Coast Conference opener.

After winning back-to-back overtime games over Appalachian State and Georgia, the Jackets struggled with Wofford (3-6), the second smallest school in NCAA Division I-A.

Donald Davis made a pair of free throws at the 7:11 mark to bring Wofford within 58-54, but Floyd answered with a pair of free throws with 6:15 to play and the Terriers never drew closer.

Starting forward Jon Babul missed his third consecutive game because of a sprained left ankle and likely will be out against Kentucky. Center Alvin Jones, despite scoring only five points, pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds.
