Fashion designer Tommy Hilfiger received the Big Orange Award at the California Cosmetic Assn.’s annual holiday award gala Nov. 20 at the Beverly Hills Hotel. More than $50,000 was raised for breast cancer research, prevention and treatment at the USC / Norris Cancer Center and Hospital. Leonard A. Lauder, chairman and chief executive of the Estee Lauder Cos., presented the award to Hilfiger for being an influential leader in the cosmetics industry. More than 325 guests attended, including Dr. Melvin J. Silverstein, co-director of the Harold E. and Henrietta C. Lee Breast Center at USC / Norris; Michael Steinberg, chief executive of Macy’s West; and Robert A. Nielson, president of Aramis Inc. The California Cosmetic Assn. is a social, professional and philanthropic organization working to foster relationships among cosmetic industry people and to make a contribution to the community.

Art and food were the stars of “Appetite for Art . . . A Taste of Time,” featuring renowned chefs from 27 Los Angeles restaurants and works from more than 100 artists. The Nov. 21 gala was held at the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood. The more than $100,000 raised will benefit the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Wine and Food and the Art Museum Council of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. More than 700 guests attended the event, which featured a live auction and a silent auction of art, including pieces donated by Christo, Laddie John Dill, Ed Benevante, William Wegman, Anna Silver and Gronk. Chefs creating food for the gala included Serge Falesitch and Angela Hunter of L’Ermitage Hotel, Jennifer Naylor and Gustavo Escalante of Granita, Joachim Splichal of Patina, Gloria Pink of Pink’s Famous Chili Dogs and Suzanne Tracht of Jozu.

Attorneys at Kring & Brown in Irvine and other Orange County business people raised more than $13,000 for the Orangewood Children’s Foundation in Orange by playing golf Nov. 23. The first Kring & Brown Thanksgiving Classic brought 105 golfers to Dove Canyon Country Club. The money was raised through sponsorships, drawings and donations. The foundation runs an emergency shelter, and is committed to eliminating child abuse and neglect in Orange County.

Marina Tae Kwon Do School of Martial Arts in Los Angeles raised $5,000 at a Nov. 21 martial arts demonstration featuring Sport Karate International champion master Mark Cox. About 800 people attended the event and dinner held at Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Culver City. The money is for Project Action Foundation Inc., which funds scholarships in dance, gymnastics and martial arts for underprivileged children.

The Manhattan Country Club in Manhattan Beach hosted a Nov. 20 gala, raising more than $30,000 for the victims of Hurricane Mitch. More than 250 people attended.
