One person was killed and four were wounded in a shooting Monday night near Watts, authorities said.

The shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. at a residence in the 1900 block of East 88th Street, said Sheriff’s Deputy Angie Prewett.

“It appears to be gang-related,” Prewett said.

Of the four wounded victims, one was in critical condition and three were in stable condition at local hospitals.

“Preliminary information indicates that a suspect or suspects walked up to the location and fired as many as 25 rounds from outside the doorway at the victims,” Prewett said. “It appears that an assault-type weapon was used.”

The assailants remained at large late Monday.

Although the number of homicides in the county has continued to decrease during the past few years, the past week has been unusually deadly. In South Los Angeles alone, more than 10 people have been killed since Dec. 13.
