Moorpark Gets Grip on Victory From Line

Damaris Hinojosa took control of the free-throw line in the fourth quarter to help Moorpark High engineer a 66-61 comeback victory over El Camino Real in a Bell-Jeff tournament quarterfinal battle of regional powers Monday.

The Musketeers, ranked fifth in The Times’ regional poll, made 17 of 20 free throws during the final period, buoyed by Hinojosa’s 10-of-11 performance.

Hinojosa also grabbed nine rebounds and sophomore center Kristin Nadas had 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Musketeers (9-1).

Cara Blumfield scored 25 points for the No. 9-ranked Conquistadores (9-4). Christina Aguinaga contributed 16 points for El Camino Real, including three three-point baskets.

Crossroads 57, Royal 45--The Roadrunners closed the first half with a 14-4 run that proved to be decisive in a first-round Bell-Jeff tournament game.

Junior guard Kristen Galbreath scored 13 of her 20 points in the second half for the Highlanders (4-4).

Courtney Young scored 17 points for Crossroads (11-1) and senior guard Tiffany Cave--second team All-Southern Section last season--added 12 points. Freshman guard Christine Smith contributed 12 points off the bench, including two three-point baskets.

North Hollywood 58, Burroughs 48--Markia Derby had 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Tashean Thomas had 18 points and six steals for North Hollywood (8-3) in a Bell-Jeff tournament quarterfinal.

Crescenta Valley 48, Wooster 46--Crescenta Valley used a strong third quarter to win the consolation game at the San Jose Archbishop Mitty tournament. Kristie Umemoto had eight of her 12 points and Kelly Paige had six of her 11 points in the third period.

Kristina Alvero had 12 points and six rebounds for Crescenta Valley (11-1), ranked No. 2 in the region by the Times.

Oxnard 51, Highland 41--Sara Wilkins scored 16 points with eight rebounds and the Yellowjackets recorded eight steals during the final 4:39 to win during pool play at the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Esmer Martinez added 11 points with nine assists for Oxnard (4-9), which finished with a 15-2 run.

Providence 47, Grace Brethren 39--Claudia Catota scored 18 points and Cathleen Reuter had 16 for the Pioneers (4-2) in a first-round victory in the Valley Christian tournament in Santa Maria.

Harvard-Westlake 63, Rancho Cucamonga 53--Omelogo Udeze had 20 points and 10 rebounds, and Rolake Bamgbose had nine points and 12 rebounds for the Wolverines (11-2) in the first round of the Ayala tournament.

Birmingham 55, Van Nuys 35--Juana Gatson scored 13 points and Ofalangi Mailangi had 10 with four steals in a first-round victory for the Patriots (5-3) at the Canoga Park tournament.

Taft 46, Monroe 32--Denisha McCoy scored 12 points to lead the Toreadors (7-1) to a first-round victory in the Canoga Park tournament. In the second half, Trisha Bratford of Taft had eight points and seven rebounds.

Ventura 60, Alhambra 58--Kristine Gleisberg of Ventura (6-5) scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds and Alex Jientke scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half in the first round of the Ayala tournament.

Schurr 44, Nordhoff 33--Kristen Roper had 19 points, 12 rebounds and six assists in a loss at the Arroyo Grande tournament. Nordhoff (3-10) lost an earlier game to Fresno Buchanan, 50-31.
