Crescenta Valley Gets Victory in Trap

Crescenta Valley High allowed only four baskets through three quarters and defeated Piedmont Hills, 32-25, in a consolation game of the Archbishop Mitty girls’ basketball tournament Tuesday in San Jose.

Sinnamonn Garrett scored 12 points and Kristie Umemoto added 10 before both fouled out early in the fourth quarter for Crescenta Valley (12-1), ranked No. 2 in the region by The Times.

The Falcons’ trapping zone defense caused problems throughout the game for Piedmont Hills (9-3), which had 11 points heading into the fourth quarter.

Simi Valley 48, Nordhoff 25--Annmarie Turpin scored 18 points and the Pioneers won their fourth game in two days during pool play in the Arroyo Grande tournament.

Simi Valley (11-2), ranked No. 4, outscored Nordhoff in the second half, 34-13, and advanced to the championship game tonight.

Earlier in the day, Simi Valley beat Schurr, 48-36, with Turpin and Elise Metcalf each scoring 11 points.

Ventura 59, Mark Keppel 32--The Cougars, ranked No. 7, held the Aztecs to 13 points in the second and third quarters and zero in the fourth to win a second-round game in the Ayala tournament.

Alex Gientke scored 18 points, Aliza Richman had 16 and Kristine Gleisberg added 14 points and nine rebounds for Ventura (7-5), which trailed, 19-13, after one quarter.

Don Lugo 54, Harvard-Westlake 45--Diana Taurasi scored eight of her 27 points in the fourth quarter, including four free throws, and Don Lugo (11-1) won a second-round game of the Ayala tournament.

Brooke Porter scored 15 points, including three three-pointers, for Harvard-Westlake (11-3), ranked No. 6.

Westlake 69, Apple Valley 57--Tawny Thorp scored 29 points for the Warriors, who outscored Apple Valley, 12-4, in overtime to win during pool play of the Thousand Oaks tournament.

Jacqui Cuffe had nine blocked shots for Westlake (5-5), which overcame an 11-point deficit in the third quarter. Thorp made 16 of 22 free throws.

Birmingham 52, San Fernando 31--Siosi Tuli scored 14 points and Juana Gatson had eight steals for the Patriots in a pool-play victory in the Canoga Park tournament.

Ofalangi Mailangi added 12 points for Birmingham (6-3), which built a 33-7 leadat halftime.

Taft 76, Canoga Park 25--Denisha McCoy scored 25 points and the Toreadors won a second-round game in the Canoga Park tournament.

Taft (8-1) led Canoga Park (1-4), 59-17, after three quarters.

Paraclete 50, Brentwood 39--Christine Lambert scored 11 of her 13 points in the third quarter when the Spirits outscored the Eagles, 21-8, to assume command of a championship semifinal in the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Paraclete (6-6) will play St. Bonaventure tonight for the title.

Erika Hernandez had 17 points and 10 rebounds, and Lambert added 13 rebounds for the Spirits.

St. Bonaventure 65, St. Genevieve 20--Shannon Fink collected 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Seraphs in a semifinal victory of the L.A. Baptist tournament.

Fink added five steals and Stacey Howard scored 13 points for St. Bonaventure (7-5).

Faith Baptist 62, Frazier Mountain 47--Christine Labins and Rose Sierra each scored 19 points for the Contenders (4-2) in a semifinal game of the Valley Christian tournament in Santa Maria.
