Wrong-Way Driver Killed on I-5
An 88-year-old Long Beach man died Sunday when he struck an abutment while driving the wrong way on Interstate 5, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man was driving south in the center breakdown lane of the northbound freeway when his car ran into the concrete. The crash happened about half a mile north of Ortega Highway and the unidentified victim died instantly, a CHP spokeswoman said.
“We don’t know how he got there or what he was doing,” she said. Authorities are investigating the cause of the 6:30 a.m. crash.
