Salser Quells La Verne’s Late Rally

Mike Salser sank seven of 10 free throws in the final 38 seconds, and Cal Lutheran survived a strong La Verne rally, defeating the Leopards, 87-85, in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at La Verne.

The Kingsmen (10-8, 6-1 in conference play), who won their sixth consecutive game, led by nine points with just over four minutes remaining before the Leopards (14-4, 6-1) made their run.

Salser finished with 28 points and 11 rebounds, and Chris Whitfield added 14 points for Cal Lutheran.

Mike Dulaney added 13 points for the Kingsmen and Danny Sweeney had 12. Dulaney had seven rebounds, while Sweeney added five.

In other men’s games:

Glendale 88, Canyons 80--Juan Corleto sank seven three-point baskets and finished with 28 points, and Glendale (13-11, 3-2) built a 15-point halftime lead and held on for a Western State Conference South Division victory at Glendale.

Chris Moreland had 24 points for Glendale.

Bryan Finley finished with five three-point baskets and 31 points, and Moses Lindsey added 21 points and 10 rebounds for Canyons (9-15, 1-4).

Hancock 111, Oxnard 76--Rod Stevenson scored 29 points for Oxnard (2-22, 0-4) in a Western State Conference game at Hancock.

Antelope Valley 67, Cerro Coso 64--John Burrell scored 22 points for Antelope Valley (17-9, 3-1) in a Foothill Conference home game.

Le’Tre Kelly added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the Marauders.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Canyons 93, Glendale 62--Laura Tweedy had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Maxine Unverferth had 16 points, and Narineh Hartoonian added 11 points and 14 assists for Canyons (20-7, 6-0) in a Western State Conference South Division game at Glendale.

Gohar Tumanian scored 15 points off the bench for Canyons.

Valley 83, Bakersfield 47--Freshman Maricella Rodriguez, last week’s conference player of the week, had 19 points, 15 rebounds and six steals for Valley in a Western State Conference home game.

Tanya McLaughlin added 23 points and six assists for the Monarchs (17-9, 5-1), while Nyoki McKeith had 11 points, eight assists and seven steals.

Ventura 111, Moorpark 78--Lynda Amari had 26 points, 13 assists, six steals and five blocked shots, and two-time defending state champion Ventura (27-1, 5-0) reached the century mark for the fourth time this season in a Western State Conference North Division game at Ventura.

Amirah Leonard had 23 points and six rebounds for Ventura.
