Vanguard Women Rally to Win at Azusa Pacific

Southern California College, ranked No. 25 in the NAIA in women’s basketball, had to rally twice to defeat Azusa Pacific, 67-64, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Friday night at Azusa.

After trailing, 35-26, at halftime, SCC (20-5, 7-0 in conference) went on a 15-2 run in the first four minutes of the second half to take a two-point lead. Azusa Pacific (13-10, 2-5) hit two three-pointers to put the Cougars ahead 60-54, but the Vanguards, led by Alana Kempton’s 17 points, rallied again outscoring the Cougars, 13-4, the rest of the game. Elaine Whittemore scored 12 points for the Vanguards.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s basketball:

Azusa Pacific 98, Southern California College 85--Azusa Pacific, ranked sixth in the NAIA, went on a 13-0 run in the final five minutes.

Terence Wilborn had 25 points and Dennis Keane 20 points for the Vanguards (15-11, 4-4).

Jason Boswell had 23 points and Jeremy DeVries scored 21 points for Azusa Pacific (22-4, 7-1).

In nonconference men’s basketball:

UC San Diego 90, Chapman 63--Mike Wall scored 17 points for UC San Diego. Cole Miller added 16 points and Mark Sebek had 13 points for the Tritons (15-5).

Nate Strange led host Chapman (9-10) with 13 points and nine rebounds. Gil Gonzales and Anthony Brown had 12 points for the Panthers.

In Pacific 10 Conference wrestling:

Stanford 37, Cal State Fullerton 3--Fullerton’s Sean Kim defeated Rudy Ruiz, 29-13, at 118 pounds. Teammate Joey Cougheran provided the Titans with their only other victory, defeating Zach Zimmerer, 4-3, at 126 pounds.

Fullerton is now 3-8, 1-3 in the Pac-10. Stanford is 2-8, 1-4 in conference.
