El Camino Real Tagged by Taft With First Loss

Lisa Hawkins had 13 points and 12 rebounds and Tynisha Howze had 10 points and 15 rebounds to help Taft High upset previously undefeated El Camino Real, 46-37, in a West Valley League girls’ basketball game Friday at El Camino Real.

Oreeille Revish scored nine points for Taft (14-6, 8-2 in conference play), which held high-scoring Cara Blumfield to eight points.

Blumfield was averaging 23.8 points a game after scoring a career-high 44 against Chatsworth on Wednesday.

Taft avenged a 66-62 loss to El Camino Real (19-1, 9-1) earlier this season.

“We didn’t foul as much [this game],” Taft Coach Elliot Turret said. “We were able to play a very aggressive defense and contain them without fouling.”

Karen Shun had 16 points for El Camino Real.

In other City Section games:

Grant 74, Van Nuys 11--Nakeisha Perkins had 23 points, 17 rebounds, six steals and five assists for Grant in a Mid-Valley League game at Van Nuys.

The victory gave the Lancers (20-4, 9-1) a share of the league title along with North Hollywood.

Because Grant and North Hollywood split their two games with each other and posted identical records in league play, a coin flip will determine which team will enter the City Section 4-A Division playoffs as the league’s No. 1 team.

North Hollywood 81, Monroe 28--Markia Derby had a season-high 36 points--including 18 in the first quarter--had 15 rebounds for North Hollywood in a Mid-Valley League game.

Derby hit 16 of 20 shots from the field and three of three free throws to help the Huskies (23-2, 9-1) gain a share of the league title with Grant.

Tashean Thomas had 16 points and six steals for North Hollywood, which made 36 of 66 shots.

Granada Hills 39, Birmingham 38--Jessica Cosby made two free throws with 10 seconds left and the Highlanders (15-4, 9-1) hung on to win a North Valley League game at Granada Hills.

The Braves (13-7, 6-4) got the rebound off the second miss, but missed two free throws and three shots underneath the basket in the final seconds.

Sylmar 36, Reseda 31--Veronica Ramos scored 12 points and Michelle Jimenez had 10 rebounds for Sylmar (10-9, 6-4).

The Spartans entered the game in a three-way tie for first place in the East Valley League with Reseda (8-11, 5-5) and Poly, and will enter the playoffs as the No. 2-seeded team because Poly defeated them twice.

Kennedy 45, Chatsworth 38--Senior point guard Brandy Johnson had seven points and 12 rebounds--including eight on the offensive end--to lead Kennedy (4-12, 2-8) in a Northwest Valley Conference game at Chatsworth.

Half of Johnson’s rebounds gave Kennedy second shots in the fourth quarter, when the Golden Cougars outscored Chatsworth, 21-9.

Gina Everett paced Chatsworth (6-16, 2-8) with 14 points.

Poly 45, Canoga Park 38--Eileen Bermudez had 11 points, six rebounds and 11 steals for Poly (8-11, 6-4) in a Valley Pac-8 Conference game at Canoga Park.

Quiana Jeffries had 14 points for Poly, which won a share of its second consecutive East Valley League title.

Tiffany Saunders had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Canoga Park (0-16, 0-10).

Cleveland 47, San Fernando 31--The Cavaliers (10-10, 3-7) led, 27-5, at halftime and cruised past the Tigers (6-16, 2-8) at Cleveland.

Schquay Brignac had 14 points, 12 steals and six assists for Cleveland.

SOUTHERN SECTION

Thousand Oaks 62, Newbury Park 50--Nicole Vasquez scored 15 points for the Lancers (17-6, 12-2) to guarantee them a share of their third straight Marmonte League title at Newbury Park.

Thousand Oaks, who is playing its last season under retiring Coach Chuck Brown, outscored Newbury Park, 25-9, in the third quarter to break a 31-31 tie at halftime.

Vasquez was one of four Lancer players to score in double figures. Caroline Swarts paced Newbury Park (10-13, 6-8) with 20 points.

Paraclete 51, Kern Valley 29--Christine Lambert had 16 points and 18 rebounds and Kate Robinson had 21 points and six steals for Paraclete (17-5, 7-3) in a High Desert League home game.

Santa Paula 58, Calabasas 55--Center Lorrine Basua had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Cardinals (9-15, 4-6) to a victory at Calabasas.

Santa Paula senior forward Erica Vint had 15 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, and sophomore forward Sarah Kolbeck had 14 points.

Village Christian 59, L.A. Baptist 52--Jenny Greslie scored 23 points and Karri Keeble had 16 for Village Christian in the Alpha League third-place playoff game at L.A. Baptist.

With the victory, Village Christian (7-18) advanced to the Southern Section playoffs as the Alpha League’s No. 3 team.

Providence 46, Holy Martyrs 29--Lisa Elazegui scored 14 points for Providence (21-1, 14-0) in a Liberty League game at Holy Martyrs.

Providence clinched its first league title Wednesday with a home victory over Viewpoint.

Oakwood 43, Viewpoint 29--Stephanie Glucksman had 15 points and six assists for Oakwood (10-11, 8-6) in a Liberty League game at Oakwood.
