Calvary Chapel 57, Anaheim 6--The defending and four-time state champion won its fourth straight section dual-meet title at Ventura High.

The Eagles (21-1) established themselves early in the finals, winning in four consecutive weight classes, starting with Steve Esparza’s 18-1 decision over Gerson Chacon at 105 pounds.

Eagles Coach John Azevedo said his team performed masterfully against some tough competition.

“The guys were mentally and technically tough all day. It carried through the finals,” Azevedo said. “There were some good teams here today that we had to beat and we did it.”

The Eagles’ Adam Bones defeated Chris Arzate, 12-2, at 114 pounds. And the Eagles recorded their first pin of the match when Frank Gill (121 pounds) put Chris Estrada on his back at 4 minutes 15 seconds. Josh Johnson followed up with a fall at 5:08 against Louie Sandoval at 127 pounds.

Anaheim Coach Joe Mark knew going into the match that his team was in for a rough time.

“It’s tough wrestling these guys, because they throw everything and everyone at you. There is no let up in the way they go at it,” Mark said.

The Colonists (24-3), semifinalists in the meet the last two years, picked up points at 132 pounds when Daniel Lee decisioned Kurt Finney, 16-11. The only other Colonist to win was Tim Dye, who decisioned Arsen Alevsanyan at 173 pounds, 7-4.

Calvary Chapel heavyweight Donnie Garcia scored an 8-5 decision over Chris Guerrero.

The Eagles advanced to the finals with victories over Oxnard Hueneme, Indio and host Ventura.
