A one-day fund-raising event brought in $4.45 million for charities supported by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles, officials said Monday.

Volunteers for the annual “Super Sunday” phone-a-thon reached 12,000 contributors, said William Bernstein, the federation’s associate executive vice president, and exceeded their goal of raising $4.4 million Sunday.

From four sites citywide, 5,000 volunteers solicited contributions to the United Jewish Fund, which benefits 15 local nonsectarian social service agencies and many international humanitarian causes.

“[Super Sunday] was a great success and demonstrates again how deeply the Los Angeles Jewish community cares about basic human services that include food, clothing, shelter, care for the elderly and education,” Bernstein said.

The federation will attempt to raise $50 million for the United Jewish Fund this year.
