LONG BEACH STATE (5-7) at NEVADA (4-5), 7:30 p.m. (KPLS, 830)--After six weeks of warm and cold nonconference performances, the 49ers begin Big West play tonight at Reno, where they will be tested by hot-shooting guards Paul Culbertson (18.8 ppg) and Robin Kennedy (14.6 points and a league-leading 6.7 assists). Long Beach answers with the inside play of 7-1 Andrew Betts, who is averaging 18.8 points and 8.3 rebounds over the four games he has played since becoming eligible Dec. 23.
