San Clemente Wrestlers Continue to Dominate

Ryan Bareng got San Clemente off to a quick start when he pinned Cory Smith in the opening 103-pound match and help ninth-ranked San Clemente to a 35-22 victory over Mission Viejo in a South Coast League wrestling Thursday.

Bareng got the fall in 3 minutes 21 seconds. Heavyweight Robert Richardson capped the Tritons’ victory when he pinned Charles Moore in 51 seconds. The Tritons are 10-3, 2-0.

In other Sunset League wrestling:

No. 8 Fountain Valley 55, Marina 9--Fountain Valley won its league opener by winning 11 of its 14 matches, including victories by Darren Kadoi at 103 pounds, Joe Oropeza at 112 and Clint Chin at 125. The Barons are 6-1, 1-0.

In the Empire League:

No. 10 Loara 47, Century 22--Edan Bar-Lev at 215 pounds and heavyweight Joel Barker recorded back-to-back pins for Loara (3-3, 1-0).

El Dorado 32, Katella 29--It came down to the heavyweight match at Katella. With the score tied, El Dorado sophomore Joe Faraone defeated Chris Pernetter, 13-3, to clinch the victory.

El Dorado (1-0) led going into the 215-pound match, but Julio Aviles won his match by fall and tied the score, 29-29.

Katella’s Adam Tapia, ranked fifth in the county at 119 pounds, won by fall in 1:14. The Knights are 0-1.

Kennedy 65, Cypress 8--Don Kim scored an 18-3 technical fall over Jeremy Young at 140 pounds for Kennedy. Francisco Diaz also had a pin in the 152-pound division for the Fighting Irish (7-2, 1-0).

In the Freeway League:

Troy 56, La Habra 15--Senior Jesse Carrasco pinned his opponent in 57 seconds, in the 160-pound match, to lead Troy (10-2, 0-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 54, Rancho Alamitos 21--Adam Griswold pinned Rancho Alamitos’ Vincent Lopez at 135 pounds in 35 seconds for Garden Grove (1-0). Teammate Tom Carter won at 171 pounds, pinning Jimmy Tawfik in 49 seconds.

Rancho Alamitos’s Mikey Mitchell pinned Garden Grove’s David Fridley at 215 pounds in 29 seconds. Rancho Alamitos is 0-1.

Los Amigos 29, Santiago 24--Augusto Partida’s pin in 3:40 at 189 pounds over Santiago’s Mike Moraz clinched the match for Los Amigos (1-0).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 54, Westminster 18--Freshman Nelson Suaraz recorded a pin in 13 seconds in the 160-pound division and freshman Dustin Aguilar followed with a pin in 3:20 at 171 pounds.

In the Orange League:

No. 5 Anaheim 68, Valencia 10--Tim Dye, ranked No. 1 in the county at 171 pounds, recorded a pin in 1:40, and Edgar Saldivar, ranked second at 189, won by pin in 29 seconds for Anaheim (17-2, 1-0).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 58, Corona del Mar 12--John Staight pinned Corona del Mar’s Sam Lingawi in 5:01 at 160 pounds as the Eagles won the league opener. The Eagles were helped by eight forfeited matches.

Corona del Mar’s John Cox won at 135 pounds, pinning Brian Schulte in 3:14. The Sea Kings won three of the five matches actually wrestled.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 46, Huntington Beach 27--Edison (2-1, 1-0) got pins from three wrestlers to earn the victory in the league opener. At 140 pounds, senior Chad Pitt pinned Casey Peterson in 1:55 to lead the Chargers. Brian Williams got a pin at 135 pounds in 1:09 and Wes Lutes took 4:20 to pin his opponent at 130 pounds.

Esperanza 61, Los Alamitos 9--In the 112-pound division, Johnny Martinez of Esperanza pinned Andrew Kang in 58 seconds. His teammate, heavyweight George Mares, pinned Mike Gailey at 2:59. The Aztecs are 10-5, 1-0.

In Academy League boys’ basketball:

Orangewood Academy 64, St. Margaret’s 52--Starly Alvarado scored 21 points and Nicholas Wolfsen had 16 points and nine rebounds for Orangewood Academy (10-3, 1-0), which outscored visiting St. Margaret’s, 17-3, in the opening quarter.

In the Arrowhead League:

Loma Linda Academy 77, Southern California Christian 49--Sang Lee scored 20 points for SCC.

In the first round of the Newport Harbor girls’ water polo tournament:

No. 6 Newport Harbor 12, Palos Verdes Peninsula 1--Jocelyn Manderino scored three of her four goals in the first quarter. Alden Moore added four goals for the Sailors (9-1), which handed Palos Verdes Peninsula (8-1) its first loss of the season.

No. 7 Villa Park 4, El Toro 3--Kristyn Pulver’s winning goal came with 27 seconds left in the game. Brandie Seligman had four saves for the Spartans. Villa Park (11-3) plays Poway in the second round at 3 p.m. today at Newport Harbor.

El Cajon Valhalla 7, Foothill 4--Foothill ‘s Jamie Belcore recorded 13 saves in the first-round loss. The Knights are 4-2.

Grossmont 9, Corona del mar 5--In the penalty-plagued game, the Sea Kings were called for 10 ejections resulting in six of Grossmont’s nine goals. Meagan Hardt had four goals for the Sea Kings (4-7). Katryn Fernald had three goals to lead Grossmont (6-4).
